How Can I Fix - Browser Crashes - Multiple Browser Crashes - Every Browser Crashes!!!?

Browser Crashes - Multiple Browser Crashes - Every Browser Crashes!!!

I upgraded from Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit) to Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) about 3-4 weeks ago.

Outside of a couple of system hiccups which have been overcome since that initial upgrade, there is one problem that I'm unable to resolve:

No matter which browser I'm using -- Firefox, Chrome, or Opera (I refuse to use IE 8) -- the browser crashes very regularly.  I'm usually experiencing crashing at least once an hour.

This browser-crashing problem did not exist prior to upgrading to Windows 7.

Firefox is the browser I use most often.  I have followed the tech support pages (Mozilla's) to the letter to resolve extension and other plug-in problems.  However, Firefox continues to crash.

...
As does Chrome….  As does Opera.

(Uninstalling/Disabling extensions and/or plug-ins has no positive effect whatsoever.)

So it seems to me that something associated with Windows 7 may be the problem, right...?

I've updated Adobe Flash and Java to see if they were the problems.  But updating has no positive effect.

I have uninstalled Microsoft's Silverlight.  No positive effect.

And on...
and on...
and on...

I have done everything under the sun that I can possibly think of -- everything associated with everything I have been able to find on other webpages.  But no success.

So what am I missing here...?

Hello highland99,

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Answers Forum.

Since uninstalling antivirus didn't make a difference, I would try to troubleshoot first with Internet Explorer 8 and see if we can get that working and then go to other browsers like Firefox.
I would make sure add-ins are disabled.

Then if you are still having problems with IE8, then try a clean boot to see if we can determine if a program or software is causing a issue with your browser.
KB 929135 - How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
I would like to see if any startup items or third party services could be causing the issue with your causing a browser to crash.  This is called a clean boot.
You will Disable all startup items and third party services when booting.
This method will help
us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service.
The steps below will place your computer into a “clean boot”, meaning using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that we can determine whether a background program is interfering with the Icons being blank.
·       Click Start on your Desktop
·       Type msconfig in the Start Search box and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
·       On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
·       Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
·       Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
·       Click OK.
·       When you are prompted, click Restart.

Once the computer is back to your Desktop, check to see if browser works.
If the issue is resolved by placing the machine in “clean boot” then we have some sort of third party application and or service running that is possibly interfering with the Icons.
To determine which program(s) and or service(s) that is causing this, we
would need to go back into “msconfig” and start to enable programs and services and reboot until we see which one causes the browser to crash.
You can do this one program at a time, or in blocks at a time.
If a block of programs causing the problem, then we
can then work with the programs one at a time.

For information on using “clean boot”, see the following Microsoft Article:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796
If placing the computer in “clean boot” does not fix the browsing issue or after the troubleshooting is done, follow the steps “To return your computer back to normal boot”.
To return your computer back to normal boot:
·       Click Start on your Desktop
·       Type msconfig in the Start Search box and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
·       Click the General tab.
·       Click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
·       When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

How to set your computer back, to boot normal:

1.
Click the Start orb on your Desktop
2.
In the Start Search box.
Type msconfig, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

3.
Click the General tab.

4.
Click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.

5.
When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.
Please reply back and let us know if you were able to get IE8 to work and not crash.

Sincerely,

Marilyn
