Troubleshooting:Backup Error code 0x8007005 "access is denied" after upgrade to Windows 7 SP1 Error

Backup Error code 0x8007005 "access is denied" after upgrade to Windows 7 SP1

2 computers both running Windows 7 Professional..   Allowed Windows Update to install Service Pack 1,  now unable to run back-ups..   Getting the following error:

"Access" is Denied"     Error Code 0x8007005

Back-ups ran successfully since Windows 7 installed over 1 year ago till now..
Both computers backing up to external USB drives.  Back-ups are set for System Image & full data.

---------
Additional info - have now run chkdsk on both computers & both external drives..   also sfc /scannow on both computers..    Back-ups still failing..    will run for hours (literally - all day/night), & then fail..    Noticed on one of the computers, it had
gotten to 98% and was creating a "shadow copy" (which I had thought only happens when the back-up starts), then when I checked it again later, it had failed with the above error.   Worked perfectly before allowing Windows Update to install SP1.    I am the
only user on both computers (Admin ID with UAS turned OFF).   Checked permissions on the drives and still shows Full Control.

Need help in figuring this out and fixing..    Really don't want to remove SP1 from both computers and not even sure if I'd be able to restore a System Image at this point as the images are included with my scheduled back-ups and might now be corrupted.
(guessing at that).

Thanks
