Adding a reference ID number to a child-table. Please correct my syntax."
' Two of the field names in a table 'LstReference-Table' are,
' ITEM_ID (Autonumber) and ITEM_NAME
' In a related and dependent table 'LstWork-Table' two of
' the field names are, 'ITEM-ID (Type 'Number')which
' needs entering, and ITEM-NAME which has just been
' entered by selecting from a list and which name is
' known to exist in the reference table and which may,
' in fact, have been entered by selection from a
' list-box based on the reference table.
' Philosophical question 1 - could all this have been done
' automatically when the list-box was used ?
Write code to find & return ITEM_ID-AUTONUMBER and
' insert it in the blank ITEM-ID.
Assume at first that
' list-box entry is not being used.
' Note Style parent ITEM_ID (unerscore character)
' child ITEM-ID (hyphen)
' My trial codes have caused errors because of my ignorance of
' correct syntax.
My idea follows but may be clumsier than
' the usual way which of course I would prefer.
' Pseudocode to be run straight after ITEM-NAME has
' been entered, ie.
after update I suppose ?
' Variables probably not needed but see question below.
' Dim VarglobalNUM As Integer was defined globally.
' Dim VarprivateNUM As Integer here defined locally.
' The nitty-gritty
' Note ITEM-NAME
' Find it in LstReference-Table
' In LstReference-Table copy the ITEM_ID-AUTONUMBER,
' (if necessary to a local variable)
' In ITEM-ID force-paste the data to ITEM-ID in 'LstWork-Table'
' by replacement whether target blank or not.
' Line for debugging - check that the child field data type
' has not been changed from number to autonumber.
' Line for debugging - print in immediate window
' "ITEM-ID and ITEM-ID datatype".
' Philosophical question 2 - Bearing in mind that this code is
' locked to 'LstWork-Table'form anyway
' Is VarPrivateNUM = ITEM-ID correct
' syntax? or must ITEM-ID be preceeded by something ?
' is VarGlobalNUM = ITEM-ID(in-)correct as above also?
' END- back to work.
The next entry.
' REM dBASE IV had a useful reserved name 'REPLACE' which I can't find in
' MSAccess reserved name list.
Keys to the Problem Adding a reference ID number to a child-table. Please correct my syntax."
It is really hard to follow.
To ENFORCE a relationship between the two tables, once they are created, create a new Relationship (with the Ribbon, it should be under Database Tools), bring the two tables in the graphical part, and then, drag and drop the primary key field from the reference
table and drop it over the field whcih refereces it in the "child" table.
Complete the edition difalog by checking the Enforce Referential Integrity.
The easiest way to enter data (eventually) in both tables? the easiest way is with a form based onto a query which will have the two tables and a join over the relation. If you don't want to allow that the end user add data in the parent table, better to
have a form based only the child table, and have a combo box for the refered field, with a limit to list, and a list made of the values from the parent table.
Alternatively, you can define a LOOKUP in table design view (for the child table) so that you can
select the values from the lookup (filled from the parent table), rather than typing them.
The SQL statement for a REPLACEment is an UPDATE.
- Go to the Start button.
- In the Search box, type "regedit" (without quotes) and press Enter.
- Look for the following registry key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions".
- On the right window pane, delete the subkey: "Machine Throttling".
- Reboot your computer.
